About Me
Who am I? Well I'm an engineer of course (well sort of). But really, I am. I simply go by the Sort-of-Engineer because these are smaller projects done at home, where my resources are more limited, and practices more lax. The name is just an excuse for the informality of the website. All my diagnostics are done with a hand held multimeter and USB oscilloscope that is more or less adequate. I use an old ATX power supply as my bench supply, have made a few breakouts for testing, and not too long ago got myself a soldering iron that a grown up would use. So yeah, I just make what I can with what I have. Occasionally I'll go to some place like Digi-Key and buy a bunch of parts, but only with vague intentions in mind. Ultimately I am attempting to share the design process for what I hope are interesting projects, and along the way maybe someone will learn a little something.
Many of my projects do seem to revolve around music. That is simply because I am always involved in being a musician, sound guy, or sometimes both. You tend to do the things you see an application for. Software programmers are not likely to code an inventory database system at home (even though they do at work), they're more likely to make a game, web page, or something that applies more to an individual. But that is the creative part of being an engineer. You get to say "what if I could...." and try to solve that challenge.
